The Journey
The Journey
On August 26, 1778, four hearty men from Bohinj—surgeon Lovrenc Willomitzer from Stara Fužina, miner Luka Korošec from Koprivnik, chamois hunter Matevž Kos from Jereka, and Štefan Rožič from Savica—embarked on an extraordinary journey to become the first to conquer Triglav.

Armed with only modest equipment but a wealth of experience, these pioneers set out to achieve what had never been done before. Their mission was inspired by the renowned Baron and Enlightenment thinker Žiga Zois, who hoped to gain new scientific insights into the geological and mineral composition of the mountain.
The ascent was a meticulously planned three-day endeavor. On the first day, the men traversed through the picturesque Voje valley, reaching Velo polje by nightfall. Their progress was steady, driven by their collective determination and expertise in navigating the challenging alpine terrain.
The second day saw them pushing further westward. They established a camp at the base of Triglav, preparing for the final and most arduous part of their journey. The team split into groups, each exploring different approaches to find the safest and most feasible route to the summit. Their perseverance paid off, and they identified a viable path via the Zeleni plaz.

On the morning of the third day, their efforts culminated in success as they stood atop Triglav, 2,864 meters above sea level. This historic moment marked the first recorded ascent of Slovenia’s highest peak. The sense of accomplishment was profound, as they had triumphed over nature’s formidable challenges and achieved a significant milestone in mountaineering history.
The descent was equally important, as they meticulously documented their route by building stone markers. These cairns served as navigational aids for future climbers, ensuring that the path to Triglav would be remembered and followed by others. Their pioneering spirit, combined with the support of Žiga Zois, not only expanded scientific knowledge but also inspired generations of adventurers.
